Today we remember Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop of Alexandria, Teacher of the Faith
Cyril was born in Alexandria and is first heard of as a young priest. He succeeded his uncle as Patriarch in the year 412 and began his great defense of the orthodox doctrines of God the Holy Trinity, and of the Incarnate Christ as a unique, single Person, at once God and human. His chief opponent was Nestorius, the Patriarch of Constantinople, who appears to have taught that there were two separate Persons co-existing in the Incarnate Christ, the one divine and the other human. The Nestorian Party thus rejected the description of Mary as Theotokos, ‘the God-bearer’, and also rejected the papal ruling that they comply with Cyril’s doctrinal position that the union between divinity and humanity in Christ was total and real. The Council of Ephesus was convened in the year 431 to rule on the matter and eventually gave its full support to Cyril, making the term Theotokos the touchstone of Christian orthodoxy. Cyril’s writings reflect his outstanding qualities as a theologian. They are marked by precision in exposition, accuracy in thought and skill in reasoning. He died at Alexandria in the year 444. A prayer for today:
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a Presiding Bishop for this Episcopal Church that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
